W.I.P. Wednesday … August 4

Thank you to everyone that sent in your WIPs.  We have a wonderful parade for you this week.  You’ll want to be sure to click through to all of their blog links.  They are absolutely wonderful!  Without further adieu, here are your soon-to-be masterpieces.

I have been working on completing my quilt from PS I Quilt's Pinwheel Quilt Along.  I recently finished putting this top together.  I love it.  I added a

2.5 X 5 inch scrappy border followed by another 6 inches of Kona Snow.  I used a charm pack which I cut in half for the scrappy border.  I also used the remaining "scrappy" pieces for a stripe on the backing which I sewed today.  I am sending it out to long arm quilter tomorrow and hope to have it back soon, so that I can bind it with a red fabric from this collection (Chez Moi's Boutique of Moda Fabrics).

I've been quilting for about 2 years now and I live on a private little lake with my 4 cats, one, Dawson, who "helps" me sew on occasion. I'm attaching a picture of him, too!

This summer I am working on a one block wonder quilt.  I had a wonderful friend teach me the technique and after mastering the kaleidoscopes I read further in my book on how to add the cubes, as you can see from in the picture. I'm attaching a draft photo of the quilt on my design board that I took recently.  The fabric is 5 yards that I bought on sale at a local quilt, who doesn't love a great sale? And the fabric is from Flower Show II by Benartex.  The cubes are a light, medium and dark from 3 similar colored fabrics.  I hope you like!

I've also just recently started a blog and am still getting it develop and arranged the way I want it.  (as you can see, it's still in it's "draft" form, too.)

Nina W. … Kremmling, CO
My name is Nina, and I'm from a small community, Kremmling, CO., in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.  I made my first quilt at age 15 and do almost everything by hand, including piecing and quilting.  This project is an exception.  I'm piecing by machine.

I am currently working on my little quilt for the Doll Quilt Swap.  I am having fun playing with linen and some fun, bright scraps.  I just finished up the quilt top and now I am trying to decide how I want to piece the back.  This top measures 18"x22".

This is a "Big girl blanket" I am making for a friends little girl. Its quilting cottens that I have forgotten the name of already! This is the blocks I made before cutting them up for the disapearing 9 patch. One of my many works in progress.

I just finished this today. It's a kit called Cosmos in Bloom that I won in a give-away. I'm planning to give this to some friends who are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday.

Next up, finishing a quilt for my SIL's birthday on 12th August. No pressure there then!

Surprisingly I am currently only working on 2 quilts right now. I usually have about 5 going at a time. I have finished the quilt top for my charity quilt. This "Princess Quilt" is going to a special girl via the Wrapped in Hope program with Margaret's Hope Chest (www.margaretshopechest.com). I was told the little girl likes horses and pink, so I thought this fabric collection (Castles and Carriages by Studio R Designs) was perfect for her. I made a similar quilt for my niece and had plenty of leftover fabric, however I did run out of the backing fabric that I wanted. Luckily, I was able to find some on Etsy! While I wait for the rest of that fabric, I am finishing up the binding on my nephew's quilt. It is a zig zag quilt using only rectangles. Since he loves cars, I decided to use the Wheels fabric collection by Riley Blake. I love all the bright colors and the cars are so cute! I should be finishing up this quilt in the next couple of days.

When I have time lately, I have been working on this. I blogged about it here  and NO, this is not the layout. I am working on making all this scrappiness look right. I may end up adding solid squares between the patchwork pieces so it makes sense.
If you read the blog post, I got the pattern from an older Quilt magazine. I am using lots of scraps and a bunch of fat quarters I fell in love with at Joann's a few years back.
I work full time (I do get to sew at work, but that is without design wall, iron, room to lay out pieces anywhere,) I have a daughter and grandson living with us, and so I have little time (or room) to really be the sewist and quilter I daydream about. I don't even have a designated sewing room for the foreseeable future! But I can always find a place for more fabric!

OK then I will reveal the secret early even if it isn't finished yet.
This week-end I have started making a bag for my son's V-Tech Kiddizoom. I am using a scrap of fabric by Timeless Treasure that I bought a while ago and the lining is from Fabic Traditions.

I have enclosed a picture of the fabric and a picture of the work in progress

I am Celine, French Mum of 2, I live in the United Kingdom and my blog addy is below (haven't blogged about this yet though!)

Many thanks for the fun idea, I should check back your blog tomorrow for lots of great inspiration I am sure. And who knows maybe I will be lucky enough to win fabrics to add to my stash!

I am working on several projects this week, but this is the one I will share with you.  Several years (about 6) ago my grandson made his own notecards.  At the time, I thought it would make such a great quilt.  I have finally gotten around to doing it since he is redoing his room and I thought it would make a great wall hanging in there.  I will raw edge applique the snake onto it and then quilt it.  By the way, I did not mess up on the HSTs.  His drawing has one row that reverses the design, but I notice that my background is upside down in the picture.  I am sure you can get the general idea.

Kristine …  Georgia
My current project is a baby quilt for my nephew and his girlfriend using the "stacked coins baby quilt" tutorial by crazymomquilts.  The fabric is the Antoinette collection by Connecting Threads.  Right now I'm just sewing together 2-1/2" strips, then I will cut them into 5" sections and stack them.  I have two recently completed quilt tops, also, that are awaiting batting so they can be quilted: the blue/tan quilt is a twin size made from the Irresistible Indigo 3 collection and the other is one of two pinwheel samplers from Rachel's pinwheel sampler quilt-a-long (p.s. i quilt) in the Sweet & Sour collection (both Connecting Threads fabrics).  I also have a purple and white pinwheel sampler in progress, most of which is from donated scraps!

I’m working on a Urban Cabin Quilt by Atkinson Designs - twin size for my husband.  I’m using a variety of cottons in greens and greys. I'm under strict orders to use no girly colours or flowers ;-)

I am making wonky blocks to eventually make a quilt

I’m using scraps of all colors.

I’ve been into making small quilts and postcards lately.  You can see some of them on my blog.

I’m heading off to the beach with my family on Thursday  - looking forward to getting away!

I'm right in the middle of making a scrappy version of Karrie Lyne's "Random Reflections" quilt, from the Moda Bake Shop, and it's a beauty!  I've used all fabrics from my stash for the print pieces, so there's no telling what's in there!  The solid is a Kona cotton in either Caribbean or Turquoise, I'm not sure which - I've had it for a while.  I'm planning to do straight line quilting on this, which I think will really complement Karrie's great design.   This quilt is going to a 17-year old girl who was recently diagnosed with cancer so I chose the brightest and most cheerful prints I could find in my stash.

I am working on a picnic quilt crafted from old denim jeans and red/white/blue fabric I have gradually been collecting. The pattern I am using is “Through the Looking Glass” from the book Block Explosion by Cindy Casciato, although I am reducing the scale and making it queen size.

Delinda L. …  West Tennessee
I'm working on a small Sunbonnet Sue redwork quilt with a block to represent each month of the year.  And I just completed block 12 tonight ~ whoo hoo ~ so tomorrow I'll be cutting my sashing and borders.  Just keeping it really simple but I can hardly wait to have it all done.

I've attached some pictures of the finished 5" blocks (hand embroidered with pearle cotton thread) on my cotton fabric.  It's the first time I've used the stem stitch and I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out.

Thought I’d send a photo of my big WIP (just don’t look at the creases!).

I’m hand piecing a double wedding ring quilt made with 1930’s fabrics.

On Friday I’m off on my Quilting Guild’s annual retreat where I aim to get the next 4 rings put together. Well, I’m going to try anyway (in between the sewing,  talking and eating)!

I'm working on this quilt that is taking a lot of my time. I'm needing a good name for it if someone has an idea.

Carla …  Venice, FL
I just finished a set to send for a swap. The apron and casserole carrier were fairly easy but I've never done applique before and the pincushion was very difficult. This was my 4th try. It's still not right, but the best I could do.

Rhue L. …  Dallas, OR

I am making the Mammy quilt for my sister-in-law who collects Mammy stuff
I am making the New York Beauty for myself
No plans yet on the 3rd one (forget the name)
Butterfly is a bedspread for my bed.

I have  a large stash and love the scrappy quilts.   They are all good quality 100% cotton fabrics.   I make large blocks of stuff from my stash that I am not as fond of as I was when I bought it.   But makes the backs of my quilts look beautiful.       I make them in sections, quilt that section and add next one so that its easier to handle  hand quilting them.   When all the sections are attached, I put on the binding.

I'm working on a belated-baby-gift.  This is a quilt is called Alpha Buddies which I found in the Fons & Porters Summer 2010 Kids Quilts magazine.   I'm using the Alpha Buddies line designed by Nancy Murty for Andover Fabrics.  Hopefully the baby won't reach his first birthday before I finish it .... :)   I've actually finished other projects which can be found on my blog.

Kathie L. …  Allentown, PA

Hello, I'm Kathie Laposata from Allentown, PA.  I'm currently putting together blocks that I swapped as part of the Modern Siggy Swap II.  We were to use solid white for the signature piece and any modern fabric for the rest.  I'm using Sandy Gervais' Objects of Desire for my setting borders.  It's a fun project to beat the summer heat.

I'm sewing two blocks for a qal, two quilts that need binding, and one also needs to be quilted, and I'm making a skirt.  Today I hope to finish the blocks and maybe the skirt.  I'd love it if I made the binding strips too.

These are not designer fabrics.

I’m working on a wall quilt for my daughter.

Every bit of this is from my stash. We used scraps for the appliqués and next we’re cutting more scraps for a pieced border or two. See photos attached.

Congratulations :)
