It’s all in fun …

A little over three years ago, I received a phone call from my sister-in-law Darla, telling me that she had just purchased an APQS Millenium long-arm.  Of course the first question anyone asks someone who’s just bought one of these gigantic treasures is, “Where are you going to put it?”  Quickly followed by, “and what are you going to do with it?”

“In the garage, of course,” and “quilt!”

“Congratulations!  Now I have somewhere to send all my quilts :)

About a year later I called Darla and said, “You’ll never guess what I just did – and, no, it does not include a long-arm.”  She was more shocked than I when I told her The Quilt Shoppe had been born.  She was ecstatic because now she had a place to purchase more fabric.

Last Spring I invited her to go to Spring Market with us.  She didn’t see the need to go, but I convinced her it would be a lot of fun.  She had a great time (what quilter wouldn’t) and even made a few new acquaintances.

Keep in mind that up to this point, I have the upper hand in knowing what’s coming out 6 months from now ….. Fast forward to October 2008, and I receive another phone call …

”You’ll never guess what’s on my machine.”

“A quilt?”

“Yes!  And, it’s with fabric that you’ve never seen before because it’s a quilt for Fall Market for Elizabeth Scott from Late Bloomer Quilts.  And, oh, by the way, I can’t send you pictures, cuz you can’t see it yet!”

Ah – she got me!  Now we tease each other every time market comes around.  As soon as emails start coming out with new fabrics I quickly call her to tell her, “Ha, ha.”  It usually doesn’t take long before I get the phone call, “Have you seen the new fabric from …. it’s to die for, but, oh, I’m sorry, you won’t see it ‘till market.”  It’s a new tradition that’s a whole bunch of family fun.

Here are a couple of pictures she sent me of quilts she did for Elizabeth for Spring Market.  First, Elizabeth is an incredible designer.  Second, my sister-in-law really puts the icing on the cake.  I know you’ll all agree, they are beautiful.

These two are from the Cottage Rose pattern from Late Bloomer, featuring fabrics from Robyn Pandolph’s new collection, Somerset Cottage.

P1010458P1010457

These are from the Hopscotch pattern from Late Bloomer featuring fabrics from the Aster Manor collection by 3 Sisters for Moda.

We’ve ordered both of these patterns as well as the other new patterns just released from Late Bloomer Quilts.

Thank you Elizabeth and my dear sister-in-law, Darla, for sharing your amazing talents.

Drum Roll, Please!

We received this sweet little email this morning …

“What happened to Day Four?”

Day four, day four … hmmmm … OMGosh! DAY FOUR!

So terribly sorry :-( We’ve been grabbing every spare minute we can putting together new BOMS (which you’ll be seeing in the next 24 hours, scouts honor!) and looking at all the brochures and fliers and pamphlets will all the coolest new patterns trying to pick which ones we think you’ll love the best (do you have any idea how hard that is!)

First, I must congratulate you all. Your creativity reaches much farther than just your quilting expertise. I did, in fact, have a very easy phrase in mind …

Quilting, Pittsburgh Style!”

and several of you wrote just that, or “Pittsburgh Style Quilting.”

But we got some really creative and fun ones, too!

“Stepping out in style to see all the magnificent quilting going on in Pittsburgh!”

“I found my quilting style in Pittsburgh!”

“Pittsburgh ladies are quilting in style.”

Quilting fans had lots of style in Pittsburgh!”

“Whatever your style of quilting entails, Pittsburgh is your destination!”

“Quilting with Fig Tree fabrics is really in style when you’re from Pittsburgh!”

Okay – so here they are! The four lucky winners, each receiving 10 fat quarters from the new Mill House Inn collection from Fig Tree.

Spring Quilt Market – Saturday

Okay!  Where did we leave off?  Oh, yes, lunch break on Friday.  We spent the whole afternoon looking at more BOMs and patterns, and patterns, and patterns (did I mention patterns?), fabric and some different types of items that incorporate quilting in a fun way.  After all that work, it was time to have some fun.

Moda’s theme for this market is:

DSC03198 We already know they do fabric, and notions, and home goods, but they can throw a very impressive dinner party too!

ALL ABOARD!

DSC03136 There were actually 3 of these river boats ready to take us on a 3 hour river cruise up an down the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers.  What a blast!  Thank you, Moda, for a wonderful time!  Here’s some random pictures from our dinner.

The boat at night (left); the walkway from the dock – the sidewalls of the walkway are a huge waterfall – absolutely beautiful!

Today, Saturday, we decided to walk from our hotel to the convention center.  It’s only a 15-minute walk.  Keep in mind we’re from California.  Yesterday, the weather here was gorgeous, perfectly sunny, warm, beautiful!  So what should today be like?  Warm and sunny, of course!  When we walked out of our hotel I noticed the ground was a little wet.  Ooooh, a nice spring rain!  If you look at the pictures below you’ll notice I was dressed for another beautiful warm day, complete with sandals!  NOT!  About half way through our walk it started pouring, with no place to hide till it passed.  By the time I walked into the convention center I was soaked.  My nicely styled hair was now wet and curly.  Oh well, when life throws you raindrops, you just gotta smile and be thankful it wasn’t your only shower that morning :)

The rest of the day was spent fine-tuning more ideas and ordering more fabric.

Tomorrow will be much of the same.  Keep commenting and let us know your likes and gotta haves.

Here’s more pics from today.
